Five Elements

The Five Elements represent the interconnectedness of all organs and possible ailments within their functional systems. They provide a framework for explaining and treating various conditions and complex diseases with multiple symptoms through a single underlying cause. Each element — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — is associated with a pair of organs, specific emotions, and natural processes such as the seasons. Their interplay offers deep insight into the development and treatment of illnesses in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

The cycle (Wood – Fire – Earth – Metal – Water) describes the dynamic interaction between the elements, with each element nourishing and supporting the next — a principle fundamental to both diagnosis and therapeutic measures. In addition, there is a control cycle, in which each element keeps another in check (e.g., Water controls Fire) to maintain harmony and stability within the body.
