Tuina Massage

Massages are known and popular worldwide, as they are probably the oldest method for treating pain and relieving tension. Over the decades, various types of massage have been developed — including Tuina massage. But what exactly is behind it, how does it work, and what benefits does it offer?

What is Tuina massage?

This massage, which is an integral part of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), is a Chinese massage aimed at stimulating the connective tissue and muscles through manual techniques and often also chiropractic-like manipulations, releasing blockages, and mobilizing the joints. The body is also addressed on an energetic level. The term Tuina consists of the words Tui, meaning to push or press, and Na, meaning to grasp or pull. Tuina massage is based on the theory of the five phases of transformation, acupuncture points, and meridians. Various treatment methods and massage techniques are used. To target specific complaints, a diagnosis is made before the massage to identify issues such as muscle hardening, energy blockages, or disturbances in the meridian flow.

How does Tuina massage work, and what is its effect?

The massage is based on the same principle as acupuncture, as it follows the meridians (energy pathways in the body). When blockages occur, they can contribute to various complaints. The massage aims to resolve these blockages so that life energy can flow freely again. The organs can also be stimulated during the process. By massaging, palpating, rubbing, pressing, and warming certain points, joint mobilization is also possible. Working broadly along the meridians positively influences the flow of energy (Qi). Qi flows through the entire body, supplying all organs, tissues, and the mind. The goal is to stimulate the energy cycle and restore the balance of Yin and Yang.

What positive effects can Tuina massage have?

Tuina massage can help with musculoskeletal complaints and contribute to relaxing muscles and joints. It is also used to treat pain, internal disorders, or to strengthen internal organs. Patients often experience an improvement in their complaints during or immediately after the massage. It can also help reduce stress and bring the body and mind into harmony by balancing the energy pathways. The exact treatment depends on the specific complaints and the goal of the massage. It includes many different techniques. For example, draining massage techniques promote the elimination of metabolic waste products and have a calming effect, while strengthening techniques have a stimulating effect. A treatment typically lasts between 20 and 60 minutes. Depending on the condition, five to ten sessions are recommended, although more may be necessary for very chronic illnesses.

Tuina massage has proven effective for various complaints and conditions, such as:

  • Rheumatic diseases like osteoarthritis
  • Back problems and tension
  • Intestinal issues such as constipation
  • Stomach problems like gastritis
  • Chronic pain syndrome
  • Stress, exhaustion, inner restlessness, and sleep disorders
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Women’s health issues such as menstrual cramps
  • Neurological conditions like nerve pain

Tuina massage is suitable for all ages — whether infant, toddler, adult, or senior.
